Week 5 | Folie Reflection

The design for my Folie stemmed from an amalgamated and unfocused concept. The image is a reflection of a wing which juts imposingly out from the cliff face. This provides views for the user; through the Story Bridge towards Brisbane's central business district, and becomes an activator of an observation/reflection space. The concept for the winged representation originated from two key ideas. The historical relevance of the site links the Howard Smith Wharves to ships and boats and so the wing was an expression of wind against the sail of a sailboat. The second key idea related the beautiful views from the cliff face to the sight of a bird.

In hindsight the two key ideas were not explored thoroughly enough to generate a highly resolved design. Additionally the two key ideas should have been narrowed to one purer hypothesis. Further research including site analysis and design reconceptualisation (whilst retaining the broader silhouette of the design) should help me press on to develop a clearer image for project 2.

  2. Good job, Cody!

With regards to the two key ideas of your folie design, I am really glad to know that they have been clearly identified. Your reflection upon the design ideas in relation to the delivery of which, as well as the depth of your realisation have provided you a really good analytical inception to continue the design journey.

The two key ideas which your design was attempting to convey, as per mentioned in your reflection, one was about the shipping history of the site; the other one was the “bird’s sight view”, later derived into the wing shaped structure on the cliff face. I suspect that the design has moved into its formalisation before the essence of your key ideas was extrapolated accurately.

With the second key idea in particular, before it was symbolised with a “wing”, I think the extrapolation of it should be the unique perspective to the river and the bridge which provided by the topographical property of the cliff. Therefore, the “uniqueness”, “perspective” and the “topographical property” should be where the design conceived from.

I agree with you that “Further research including site analysis and design reconceptualisation (whilst retaining the broader silhouette of the design) should help me press on to develop a clearer image for project 2”.

After all, although the design outcome hasn’t been as satisfying as you might have anticipated, I think you have moved into the depth of conceptual analysation we are wishing for you. I am confident that your design actualisation will transcend into a more clarified level.
